False Growth Trap

Composite / composite / 3 to 6 months

What it detects

Revenue is growing but each new dollar of growth destroys value, the growth itself is making the business worse.

When it fires

Growth to Payroll Mismatch composite + revenue growing + (scenario-stress-failure OR growth sprint fails)

Why it matters

The most counterintuitive failure mode is one where growth itself is the problem: revenue is climbing, but margins are compressing and payroll is outrunning revenue, so every additional dollar of sales actually leaves the business with less. Founders instinctively try to grow out of trouble, which makes this trap especially dangerous, because here selling more deepens the hole rather than filling it. Until the underlying economics are fixed, the business keeps the appearance of momentum while quietly getting weaker with each new deal.

What it looks like in practice

Revenue grew [redacted]% this quarter. Margins compressed from [redacted]% to [redacted]%. You added $[redacted]K in quarterly revenue and lost $[redacted]K in quarterly gross profit. The more you sell, the less you keep. Growth is the enemy.

Thresholds

Exact thresholds, formulas, and severity bands are omitted from this public view. The full methodology, with every figure, is available in the authenticated app.

How it connects

Accelerating growth at current unit economics accelerates cash consumption. The growth sprint scenario — the strategy most founders would pursue — actually worsens the position. Each new dollar of revenue costs more than $[redacted] to deliver.

Why these together

Growth to Payroll Mismatch says the team is scaling faster than revenue can support; revenue growing says the founder's instinct will be to grow harder; a failing growth-sprint scenario or an active stress failure says growing harder makes the position worse. Together they describe a company whose growth is destroying value, where each new dollar of revenue costs more than a dollar to deliver. The composite fires when Growth to Payroll Mismatch is active, revenue is growing, and either Scenario Stress Test Failure is active or the growth-sprint scenario fails on its own.

Built from these checks

  • Growth–Payroll Mismatch: the required driver. It must be active, and it carries Payroll Overhang and Hiring Capacity Constrained with it.
  • Scenario Stress Test Failure: the scenario read. It is one of the two ways the composite's third leg is satisfied (the other is the growth-sprint preset failing on its own), and it is listed as a constituent when it is active.
